Country Concrete in the Applegate Valley
Ruch is a rural community on Oregon Route 238, and the concrete contractors who work here spend more time on shop floors and driveway aprons than on city sidewalks. The census-designated place covers about 6.73 square miles with 819 residents in the 2020 census, so lots are large and homes are spread out. The Applegate River runs along the southwest edge of the valley, and the area lies in the Applegate Valley wine region.
What rural property owners usually ask for
On acreage, the concrete list looks different from a subdivision lot:
- Shop and barn slabs for equipment, vehicles and storage
- Driveway aprons where a gravel drive meets the paved road
- Parking pads near the house so mud stays outside
- Patios and stamped outdoor areas with valley views
- Equipment pads for water tanks, pumps and generators
- Walkways from parking to the front door
Shop slabs done right
A shop slab carries more than a patio does. It may hold a tractor, a truck, a loaded trailer or heavy tools on legs. We start by asking what will sit on it, then set the thickness, reinforcement and base to match. We plan control joints so cracks land in straight lines rather than across the middle of a bay, and we can trowel the surface smooth for easy sweeping or leave a light broom texture near the doors for traction. We also think about where the big door goes, and whether the apron in front should be thicker, since that is where the heaviest wheels turn.
Weather in the valley
Ruch gets more rain and snow than the Medford area: about 27.45 inches of precipitation and 5.4 inches of snow a year. Average July highs reach 92°F, the record high is 112°F and the record low is -3°F. That range calls for air-entrained mixes on outdoor slabs, good drainage around them and careful timing. Summer pours start early. Winter work waits for a stretch of dry, above-freezing days.
A place with history
Casper M. Ruch bought the land here in 1896 and built a blacksmith shop, a store and a house. He became postmaster in 1897 and named the post office after himself. Nearby, McKee Bridge and the Star Ranger Station are both on the National Register of Historic Places. Many properties have a mix of older outbuildings and newer additions, and we often pour a new slab next to an old barn or replace a crumbling floor inside one.
The Applegate River and its dam
The Applegate River runs about 51 miles from the Siskiyou Mountains in California to the Rogue west of Grants Pass, and it passes Ruch on the way. The valley saw major floods in 1964 and 1974, before the Army Corps of Engineers finished Applegate Dam in 1980. The 988-acre lake behind it now provides irrigation and flood control. For riverside property here, that history is a reason to check where water has gone in past storms before setting a slab's height, and to keep shop floors and pads a few inches above the surrounding ground.
Wineries and working floors
Ruch is home to several Oregon wineries, and agricultural buildings ask different things of a slab than a garage does. A wash-down area needs a deliberate fall toward a drain. A storage floor needs to be flat enough for pallets and racks. A doorway needs a broom finish so boots do not slip. We map those zones before the pour, so one slab can do several jobs instead of being cut up and patched later.

Ruch Questions
How thick should a shop slab be for a tractor?
Heavier than a standard patio. We set the thickness, reinforcement and base for the equipment you plan to park, and we thicken the door apron where wheels turn.
Can a concrete truck reach my property in Ruch?
Usually, but we check first. We look at the driveway surface, turns, bridges and soft ground, and if the truck cannot reach the forms, we plan for a pump.
Is it worth pouring just a driveway apron at the road?
Often, yes. A short concrete apron keeps gravel from scattering onto the road, stops rutting at the entrance and costs far less than paving the whole drive.
