Talent, Rebuilding One Slab at a Time
Talent sits about halfway between Phoenix and Ashland, and many homeowners here have needed concrete contractors since the fall of 2020. The Almeda Drive Fire on September 8 of that year destroyed roughly a third of Talent. As homes go back up, each one needs a driveway, a front walk and usually a patio or pad, and we plan and pour that flatwork.
A compact town with a lot of rentals
Talent is small: 1.33 square miles at 1,637 feet, with 6,282 residents in the 2020 census. About 43.5% of its occupied homes were renter-occupied that year. For rental owners, the concrete priorities are practical. Walks need to be level enough that nobody trips, steps need solid footing, and parking areas need to hold up to daily use. We price those jobs so you can see exactly what each fix covers.
Wagner Creek and the valley floor
Talent's earlier names were Eden District and Wagner Creek, after the creek that joins Bear Creek here. The Bear Creek Greenway runs through town as well. Average precipitation is just under 18 inches a year, but it arrives in the cool months, and low spots near the creeks stay damp. For a new patio or pad, we excavate past topsoil, lay a compacted rock base and set a gentle slope. These steps are easy to skip and expensive to fix later.
Snow is a bigger factor than you might think
Talent averages 6.4 inches of snow a year, more than Medford's 3.4. Snow on its own does not damage concrete, but the melting and refreezing does, along with the deicers people throw on top. Air-entrained concrete resists that cycle far better than a plain mix. For the first winter, we recommend clearing snow with a plastic shovel and using sand instead of salt.
A rebuild checklist for flatwork
If you are rebuilding, here is how we think through the outdoor concrete: 1. Driveway: width for the cars you actually own, a thickened edge where it meets the street, and joints set no farther apart than the slab can handle. 2. Front walkway: a comfortable width, a consistent slope, and steps with equal risers. 3. Patio: placed where it gets the shade you want and draining away from the house. Stamped concrete is an option if you want texture and color. 4. Equipment pads: level, properly sized slabs for heat pumps, generators or water tanks. 5. Firebreak thinking: concrete or gravel next to the house rather than bark or wood.
Older homes that made it through
Not every street in Talent burned. A. P. Tallent platted the town in the 1880s, and it was incorporated in 1910, so some lots hold homes with decades-old concrete. Those properties need the familiar repairs: cracks sealed before water gets under the slab, sunken walk panels replaced, and old steps rebuilt.
Planning around utilities on a rebuild
Talent covers just 1.33 square miles, and rebuilt lots pack the house, utilities and drainage close together. We map where the water meter, sewer cleanout and gas line sit before we lay out forms, so access boxes end up flush with the new surface instead of buried or left as a trip edge.

Talent Questions
I am rebuilding in Talent. Can you pour flatwork while the house is still under construction?
We usually pour driveways and walks after the heavy construction traffic is over. A patio or equipment pad behind the house can sometimes go in earlier if trucks will not cross it. We coordinate timing with your builder.
I rent out a house in Talent and the front walk is a trip hazard. Can you fix just that section?
Yes. We remove the lifted or sunken panels, fix the base under them and pour new sections flush with the walk that stays.
Will snow and ice hurt a new driveway?
An air-entrained mix handles freeze-thaw well. The bigger risk is salt and chemical deicers during the first winter. Use sand for grip until the concrete has aged a full season.
